Law 1 – Embracing The Fear

 

Here is a step by step system to get you to overcome that fear, little by little follow these steps and your confidence in social environments will drastically increase. Go out anywhere you choose in your city, and perform the following exercises and rate them. Make sure you do them in order, even if you feel comfortable. Post your results and questions about them in the forum!

For each of the following exercises, rate your comfort level on a scale of 1-10 (1 being not comfortable at all and 10 being extremely comfortable) And don’t worry if you’re at a 1 now for some of this stuff, thats totally fine, intact its good that means we can improve on it! The more we practice and get used to these types of situations the more comfortable you’ll become and soon enough before you know it you’re gonna be at a 10:

Exercise 1 – Eye Contact

Make eye contact with 3 people. Hold it as long as possible.

Exercise 2 – Got the time?

Ask a stranger what time it is.

Exercise 3 – Directions

Ask a stranger for directions.

Exercise 4 – Small Talk 1

Ask for directions and then make small talk for 30 seconds.

Exercise 5 – Store Clerk 1

Make small talk with a store clerk for 2 minutes.

Exercise 6 – Small Talk 2

Start talking to a stranger about anything and keep them in conversation for 3 minutes. Example conversation openers: the weather, clothes, the environment, etc.

Exercise 7 – Store Clerk 2

Small talk with a store clerk even after the next customer is getting rung up.

Exercise 8 – Dancing 1

Dance a little bit in a public place. It needn’t be much. Just bounce a little or snap your fingers.

Exercise 9 – Walk and sing

Walk down the street while singing or rapping. There are people who do this already, maybe you’ve seen them.

Exercise 10 – Just Kidding

Go up to a stranger and put out your hand to shake, saying “Hey it’s good to see you here!” as if you recognize him or her. If they play along, fine. If not, say you were just joking or did it on a dare.

Exercise 11 – Make that guy laugh

Walk up to a stranger and start a conversation. You must make the stranger laugh. You can’t leave the conversation until you make him laugh.

Exercise 12 – Butting In

Walk up to a group of people you don’t know. Listen in on their conversation for a short time. Then, as soon as possible, butt in and start talking to them as if you’ve been in the conversation the whole time.

Exercise 13 – The Fonz

Walk into a store or other public place with strangers in it which is not loud, spread out your arms and yell slowly “Alright!” (like the Fonz) as you enter so everyone can hear, then just go into the place as normal.

Exercise 14 – Dancing 2

Dance full out on the street or in a public place.

Exercise 15 – Embarrassing Memory

Recall an embarrassing moment in a 1-on-1 conversation with a stranger.

Exercise 16 – Random Joke

Tell a joke in front of a group of strangers in a completely random place (the train, a store).

Moonwalk in a circle around a group of strangers.

Tell a deep dark secret to a stranger.
